Coop power's 2008 sustainable energy summit...

a little off topic for MH, but sent to me asking for help publicizing -- Paris

Co-op Power’s 2008 Sustainable Energy Summit
Co-op Power, a regional energy cooperative, will hold its 4th annual Sustainable Energy Summit, “Taking Charge of Our Energy Future” on June 20 and 21 at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. This event comes at an urgent time in world history with energy prices soaring, supplies dwindling, and questions of local and global equity going unanswered. The Summit is aimed at homeowners, builders, businesses, community leaders, people who want to transition into green jobs, youth and anyone else who wants to learn more about reducing our impact on climate change, cutting energy costs, and building a successful movement to take charge of our energy resources and future that reaches across class and racial divisions.
The conference will offer dozens of exciting workshops in the categories of Cost-Saving Energy Solutions, Sustainable Community Energy Options, Sustainable Living, Renewable Energy R&D Frontiers, Working Together for a Just and Sustainable Energy Future, and Tools for Community Leaders.   There will also be green job training sessions, individual consultations on reducing energy costs in “Ask the Expert – Advice to Sort Out Your Energy Options” workshops, exhibits, networking opportunities, and a community building dinner and dance Friday night.  The Umass Campus Center will offer a cash bar and delicious buffet before the dance with the 7 piece Latin Band Conjunto Tipico Sabor Campesino and DJBrando of Dance Spree.  Children’s workshops by the Urban Ecology Institute will include Solar Oven Cooking, Wind Powered Olympics, Oil Spill Cleanup, Human-Powered Skills Circuit, Worm Composting, and more!
This year’s keynote speakers are Carl Anthony and David Morris.  Carl Anthony, former president of Earth Island Institute, is one of the preeminent thought leaders in environmental justice in the United States.  He directed the Ford Foundation's Sustainable Metropolitan Communities Initiative and the Regional Equity Demonstration Initiative and co-chaired the Bay Area Alliance for Sustainable Development, a multi stake-holder collaborative bringing together business leadership, environmental groups, social advocacy groups, labor, faith based organizations, elected and other public officials.
David Morris of the Institute for Local Self Reliance was described by Bill Moyers as one of the "nation's most innovative thinkers." His talk on “Beggars or Chiefs: Communities and Renewable Energy” will speak to the need for communities to take action now or be left to beg at the door of multi-national energy giants. His research shows that locally owned energy plants are 5-10 times more economically valuable than conventional ones. David is the author of four books including Self-Reliant Cities and has been an advisor to the energy agencies of Presidents Ford, Carter, Clinton and George W. Bush.
Organizers are still accepting co-sponsors, exhibitors, and volunteers.  For all conference details and to register for the Summit, go to www.cooppower.coop or call 413-772-8898.
